Hey everyone! I am Shivam Singh Chauhan and I am currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in computer science and engineering. This is the story of my journey.

Well, my story is rather simple. I am a normal guy who never really had any special interest in anything. That said, I always wanted to stand out in the crowd.

Well, it all started when I was in fourth grade. Back then, I was just an average kid, who would play a lot more than he studied. Unlike most Indian parents, my parents did not stop me from doing so. Not at least like most Indian parents do.

I still remember that incident very clearly. It was the day before my final examination, and there I was, sprawling on a sofa in front of the television. Suddenly, my mother walked over to me and said, “Do you know one thing, my boy?”

“What?” I asked, curious.

“There are two kinds of people in this world: one who want to be part of the crowd and cheer for the ones that aren’t, and the others who lead the crowd and stand tall above everyone else.”

“Yeah, I know,” I said.

“You have an exam tomorrow. What do you think you’re supposed to do right now?”

In that brief conversation, she had imparted me the biggest lesson of my life.

I took my exam. On the day of the results, I was sitting forlorn in the school hall. Everyone who had won a trophy on the annual day looked so happy, and there I was, feeling humiliated. When I came back home, my mother sensed my disappointment and said, “You know, people don’t remember those who come second, so make sure you get your hands on that winner’s trophy next year.”

I started working hard. The results very pretty good – my score doubled and I secured the first rank in my class. There was no looking back from there, and I held on to that position until twelfth grade. I even appeared for the IIT-JEE exam and cleared it quite comfortably. I am now pursuing engineering from a reputed college, and I will remain forever indebted to my mother for her timely wake-up call.
