Growing up, I was an active child who enjoyed spending time outdoors, running and playing with friends. I never really thought much about reading, and it wasn’t something that particularly interested me. However, everything changed one summer when I was around twelve years old.

I was at my grandparents’, and one day, while I was exploring the attic, I stumbled upon a dusty old book. It was an adventure novel. Although I had never really read a book from start to finish, I decided to give it a try. I remember sitting on the floor, completely immersed in the story, and before I knew it, hours had passed.

From that moment on, I was hooked. I started reading more and more, and I found myself lost in different worlds and characters. It was like each book was a fresh adventure, and I couldn’t wait to see where it would take me.

One of the first books that really captured my imagination was The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. I remember being completely fascinated by the world of Middle-earth and the characters that inhabited it. The story of Bilbo Baggins and his journey to help the dwarves reclaim their treasure was so exciting that I couldn’t put the book down. I was so invested in the story that I started reading The Lord of the Rings trilogy as soon as I was done with The Hobbit.

Another book that had a profound impact on me was Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird. This was the first book that really got me thinking about the world and the people in it. The story of Scout Finch and her father, Atticus, taught me a valuable lesson about justice, equality, and the importance of standing up for what is right. It was a touching book that made me reconsider my perspective on my surroundings.

Udit Kumar story on Books Ameya

As I continued to read more, I discovered that books could take me on adventures, teach me about different cultures and times, and help me better understand myself and the world around me. I was no longer content to just play outside; I wanted to read about the world and all its wonders.

Years have passed since that summer, but my love for reading has only grown stronger. Whether it is a timeless classic or a contemporary bestseller, I always have a book with me. I love nothing more than losing myself in a good story.

Falling in love with reading can happen at any age, and it only takes one book to ignite a lifelong passion for literature. For me, that book was an adventure novel found in my grandparent’s attic, but for others, it may be a memoir, a romance novel, or a fantasy epic. The important thing is to find a book – or rather, the book – that speaks to you and allows you to explore the world like you never before have. For me, The Hobbit and To Kill a Mockingbird were just two of the many books that helped me fall in love with reading and continue to inspire me to this day.
