ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Dr. Joseph Murphy was an Irish Author who resettled in America. He was the Minister-Director of Divine Science in Los Angeles. His book, The Power of Your Subconscious Mind, has been an international bestseller since it was published in 1963. Dr. Murphy authored several books based on the auto-suggestive, metaphysical faculties of the mind. He specialized in using the subconscious mind for treating various diseases.
More than thirty of his books have sold ten million copies worldwide.
The central idea of The Power of Your Subconscious Mind is that our subconsciousness affects everything we do. The author has explained in detail how the subconscious mind can improve a person’s life. He begins by drawing a clear distinction between the two parts of the brain: the conscious and the subconscious. The subconscious mind is constantly at work, even when we are asleep. Building on this, Dr. Murphy convincingly drives home the fact that we can change our habits and responses to a given situation by fine-tuning our subconscious mind. He recommends extremely simple methods like praying before going to bed, being positive with our thoughts, and using our imagination to achieve our goals. He also stresses the importance of repetition for calibrating our subconsciousness.
WHAT WE LIKED ABOUT THE POWER OF YOUR SUBCONSCIOUS MIND
The Power of Your Subconscious Mind is quite old, but its principles hold true even after nearly six decades. The language is fairly simple, which ensures that most people can relate to and understand it. The author has shared examples from different walks of life. He has also made good use of his spiritual understanding and scientific acumen to demonstrate the impact of the subconscious mind on one’s daily life. In fact, he claims that this unfathomable power can even be used to cure diseases and therefore prove beneficial to mankind in general!
WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER ABOUT THE POWER OF YOUR SUBCONSCIOUS MIND
The book could have been more interesting. One cannot help but feel that this is a rather boring read. The examples are redundant and seldom have any convincing evidence to go with them. There are far too many biblical references, which may not go down too well with readers from non-Christian backgrounds.
All of us have our own inner fears, beliefs, opinions. These inner assumptions rule and govern our lives. A suggestion has no power in and of itself. Its power arises from the fact that you accept it mentally.
The law of the subconscious mind works for good and bad ideas alike. This law, when applied in a negative way, is the cause of failure, frustration, and unhappiness. However, when your habitual thinking is harmonious and constructive, you experience perfect health, success, and prosperity.
