Take a chance! All life is a chance. The man who goes farthest is generally the one who is willing to do and dare.

Life offers us several opportunities along the way. What we make of those chances is something that determines the course of our lives. Of course, grabbing these chances is easier said than done.

We are all bound by the limits we thrust upon ourselves. We inadvertently create comfort zones for ourselves, and over time, we become increasingly reluctant to step out of these safe havens. All this while, we remain ignorant of the fact that these self-imposed boundaries are nothing but mental blocks that keep us from realizing our true potential. Unfortunately, the longer we believe in these perceived limitations, the more limited we become. The outcome? We become more unwilling to take risks and become the best versions of ourselves.

However, ships are not meant to stay in harbors. Sure, that way they will be out of harm’s way, but this also means that their raison d’être – exploring the vast, wild ocean – will go unfulfilled. Sooner or the later, a ship needs to leave the dock to fulfill its destiny. While there is always the possibility of a storm devouring it in the middle of nowhere, it cannot hope to accomplish anything by remaining anchored to the pier. The same holds true for humans. While our comfort zones ensure a safe, risk-free life, they end up becoming roadblocks to our progress.

Ultimately, we need to let our imagination loose. We need to be more adventurous with the chances that come our way. Even though not all our attempts may bear fruit, we still need to keep at it. That is the only way we can be what we were destined to be.

Dale Carnegie was an American author known for his courses in self-improvement, corporate training and public speaking. A staunch proponent of the no-pain-no-gain approach to life, Carnegie once remarked: “Take a chance! All life is a chance. The man who goes farthest is generally the one who is willing to do and dare.”
