Hello, I am RV Vijayalayan! I am from Chennai. At the age of thirteen, I was diagnosed with cancer and had to undergo multiple treatments for it. My doctors advised me to stay indoors until my chemo and radiotherapy were done. This was a major setback for me, for I used to spend my evenings playing soccer and cricket. However, cancer meant that I was isolated, not to mention bored and frustrated.

As I grappled with my depression, my father bought me a wide range of books to distract my mind. That was how I became hooked to books. They became my new best friends.

Following my treatment, college life brought a new set of friends into my life. Now, I had been a smoker for around ten years. However, I was beginning to feel fed up of it. I felt like a slave to the cigarettes I smoked. I tried to shake off this habit on multiple occasions but to no avail.

That was when I stumbled upon Allen Carr’s The Easy Way to Stop Smoking. It was a wonderful read, one that dispelled my fears about smoking. It helped me get rid of that long-standing habit and lead a healthy life going forward.

Later on, in my thirties, Lockdown saw me read a lot of financial books. Arguably the best book I read in this genre was Robert Kiyosaki’s Rich Dad Poor Dad. It gave me a basic understanding of how money works and how one can make it work for themselves. The book actually helped me save up a lot of money over time.

Rhonda Byrne’s The Secret was another book that is close to my heart. It taught me the value of the twin virtues of gratitude and sublime thinking. Thirukkural is another favorite. All in all, books have helped me in more ways than one. They have been a friend, guide and mentor to me all these years, and I couldn’t be more thankful to them.
