Hi, everyone! This is Chandrika Reddy and this is the story of my journey as a reader.
I truly feel that reading an entire book is one of the best feelings in the world. Like most people in the present generation, I am also addicted to binge watching. Yeah, it feels exciting at times, but there are also times when I miss the good ol’ days when granny would tell me a story and I would imagine myself as part of it. No amount of hours spent watching an online show can beat the thrill of those bedtime stories.
One day, while I was window shopping on Amazon, I came across this book titled Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery. Actually, I had first heard about this book while watching the Netflix series, Anne With An E, which is based on Montgomery’s book. The series had come to an abrupt end after only three seasons and I was really curious to know what happens next.
Now, I must say that I had a hard time reading the book because of the number of times I had to use the dictionary or Alexa, but the story more than made up for this.
The story is set in the 1700s, I think, and is entirely about how an orphan girl faces her life after she gets adopted by a middle-class family. Everyone at school mocks her for her looks. However, she learns to defend herself and help everyone around her. She is also constantly at odds with the society for its poor treatment of women.
What struck me the most about the book was the depth at which I was able to experience the story. I felt really enthusiastic and touched while reading it. It actually felt like I was living in another world and could feel everything from Anne’s viewpoint. The book especially taught me how much courage it takes to regain one’s place in a world that has constantly humiliated them.
To sum up, I am happy I took to reading books, for it changed my life completely. In fact, these days I tend to set myself a target of reading at least one book a week. It both refreshes me from within and takes me to a world I can call my own.
