I was a kid when I fell in love with books. It’s actually hard for me to recall the exact book that sparked this affair off. What I do remember is that Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat was one of the initial books that carved out a soft spot for books in my heart. However, biographies for kids remained my favorite genre. It amazed me to no end that such great souls had walked on this planet!
The Boxcar Children series, which my mother recommended me, was another one of my favorites. In fact, she had enjoyed it so much as a child that she asked me to give it a try if I got the chance. It was actually a pleasant surprise when I chanced upon it in the library one day. I remember rushing home to show it her before actually reading it. It felt so good to read about kids living on their own. As I grew up, I started reading classics like To Kill a Mockingbird. It was this book that broadened my horizons in terms of the books adults were entitled to read. Mind you, I was only a sixth grader at the time.
That said, I will never forget the moment I became a fan of reading. Up to that point, I had been reading more out of the compulsion to read as much as I could than the desire to learn from or enjoy the experience. However, it all changed when I visited my grandma. Looking back, I wish I had gone to her place sooner! You see, there was this little bookstore not far from where she lived. She gave me some money to get a book to read. I guess even I didn’t know how this generous gesture on her part would change my life. Fortunately, that bookstore is still there, and I would love to drop by someday.
